Durban’s Super Giants have snapped up talented West Indian speedster Shamar Joseph at the SA20 Season 3 Player Auction to bolster the squad’s firepower ahead of the upcoming season.

To date, Joseph has represented the West Indies in six Tests and five T20Is, picking up 22 and eight wickets in the respective formats.

Joseph burst onto the scene during the Windies’ tour Down Under earlier this year, where he devastated the mighty Australian batting line-up to pick up 13 wickets in two Tests.

Handed his debut in the first Test at Adelaide, the fiery speedster made an instant impact, dismissing Steve Smith with his very first delivery on the international stage before finishing the match with impressive figures of 5/94.

Though West Indies lost the match, the second Test at Gabba saw Joseph take centre stage.

The pacer picked up just one wicket in the first innings but came alive in the second. With West Indies defending a modest 216, the speedster rocked the Aussies with astonishing figures of 7/68 and helped the Windies to a historic win.

What made the spell even more special was the fact that Joseph had to bowl with an injured toe, which forced him to retire hurt while batting the previous day.

Joseph bagged both the Player of the Match and Series awards and would go on to bag the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for January 2024, making him the first West Indian to claim the honour.

His exploits with the ball also saw him join the Lucknow Super Giants for the Indian Premier League 2024 season. The Guyanese quick made his IPL debut against KKR in April.

Joseph, who is currently in action for defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL, will be working with our new bowling coach Allan Donald during the upcoming season and the combination could turn out to be a lethal one.

“We’ve seen Shamar being a world class performer from the time he set the international stage alight with the seven-wicket haul against Australia. To see him grow strength to strength and have him as part of our Durban’s Super Giants family is really exciting. He will bring the X-factor into our bowling unit,” DSG skipper Keshav Maharaj said, welcoming our latest recruit.

Meanwhile, immensely talented all rounder CJ King is our rookie pick for the upcoming season. CJ’s brother JP has been named as the rookie pick for the Joburg Super Kings for the upcoming season.

“Welcome CJ King. We have seen the glimpses that you have been putting up through your performances and you’re an exciting young talent. Apart from the performances that you’re going to put on for us on the field, we’re happy to assist you to take your cricket to another level. Super excited to have you in the family,” Maharaj noted.

After a stellar runner-up finish last season, DSG will start their SA20 Season 3 campaign against Pretoria Capitals at the Kingsmead on January 10, 2025.
