Durban’s Super Giants wrapped up their SA20 2025 campaign on a winning note as they defeated Joburg Super Kings in a rain-affected game at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 1.
The Super Giants rode on Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten 76 off 47 balls, along with contributions from Wiaan Mulder (30 not out), Matthew Breetzke (23) and Kane Williamson (22) to post 173/4 in their allotted overs.
In reply, JSK were 31/1 before rain played spoilsport and the target was revised to 147 in 16 overs. Noor Ahmad later produced a match-winning spell to help DSG end their season on a high.
DSG off to a quick-fire start
Put in to bat, the Super Giants were off to a brilliant start courtesy their openers Matthew Breetzke and Quinton de Kock. Breetzke and de Kock added 39 runs for the opening wicket before the southpaw departed for 16 in the fifth over.
Visitors suffer huge blows
Later in the same over, DSG succumbed to another massive blow as the visitors lost Breetzke in quick succession. After scoring 23 runs off just 13 balls, Breetzke fell after an unfortunate run-out. Star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis soon perished in the following over.
Williamson, Klaasen steady innings
Struggling at 39/3, Heinrich Klaasen joined Kane Williamson at the crease. Williamson and Klaasen stitched a crucial partnership to bring the Super Giants back into the game. While Williamson played the anchor role, Klaasen continued his attacking game. Williamson and Klaasen accumulated 20 runs off Tabraiz Shamsi’s 11th over which gave DSG the much-needed momentum.
Klaasen’s fifty guides DSG to 173/4
Klaasen and Williamson forged a crucial 64-run stand for the fourth wicket before the former New Zealand captain fell to Hardus Viljoen in the 13th over. Following Williamson’s dismissal, Wiaan Mulder walked out to bat at No.6. At the other end, Klaasen notched up his scintillating fifty off just 34 balls. Mulder and Klaasen later slammed Hardus Viljoen for 23 runs in the 19th over. Klaasen remained unbeaten on 76 off 47 balls while Mulder’s 30-run cameo powered DSG to 173/4 in their 20 overs.
Mulder provides early breakthrough
Defending 173, DSG were off to a brilliant start as bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder removed JSK opener Leus du Plooy in the second over of the chase. Dwaine Pretorius completed a safe catch at midwicket as Leus du Plooy departed for 7. Captain Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway then added 19 runs before rain played spoilsport.
Noor magic after rain delay
After a brief rain interruption, the match resumed and the target for JSK was revised to 147 in 16 overs. The Super Giants’ star spinner Noor Ahmad soon bagged the massive wicket of du Plessis as he cleaned up the JSK skipper with an absolute ripper. The left-arm wrist-spinner continued his magical spell as he dismissed Wihan Lubbe to reduce JSK to 31/3 in 4.3 overs.
DSG continue to pick regular wickets
Later in the eighth over, DSG youngster Christopher King bagged his first wicket in SA20 as he removed Moeen Ali for 14. Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq then joined the party as he claimed the huge wicket of Devon Conway. Meanwhile, Noor continued his brilliant spell as he dismissed Sibonelo Makhanya to put massive pressure on the hosts.
Impressive win to end campaign
Reeling at 84/6, Donovan Ferreira and Hardus Viljoen stitched a 43-run stand for the seventh wicket which kept the Super Kings in the game. With 21 needed in the final over, Maharaj handed the ball to Dwaine Pretorius. While Viljoen departed in the first ball, Ferreira kept the hosts’ alive with a fifty. However, Pretorius held his nerves as he removed Ferreira and Lutho Sipamla in consecutive deliveries to help DSG restrict JSK to 135/9 and register a brilliant win to end the campaign.
