A packed out Kingsmead Stadium welcomed an opening round win for Durban's Super Giants in the Betway SA20 against MI Cape Town on Thursday night.
The Durban faithful piled into the iconic stadium to watch a Heinrich Klaasen master-class as DSG pipped the Capetonians in a run-fest that was on track to see over 400 runs scored on the night.
Over 12,000 spectators were present for the first match in Durban of the current SA20 season and the atmosphere was electric during the DSG Run chase when Klaasen got the home side on the front foot.
Thursday night's match also saw Kingsmead debuts for Umshoshapansi EzikaPhushamoya as well as the Northwood Boys High School band.
Umshoshapansi EzikaPhushamoya performed their traditional isiZulu song that has been composed, produced and performed for Durban's Super Giants. The song played around the stadium during the match and the lyrics translate to 'We shall conquer as Super Giants of Zulu'.
The song resonates on a number of level with the team coming from the Kingdom of the Zulu, as well as coach Lance Klusener's nickname being Zulu given his strong connection with the isiZulu language and culture.
The Northwood Boys High School band, also known as the DSG Vibe Tribe, made themselves at home on the North East Grass Bank and their renditions of popular songs got the crowd going and in the mood for an exciting evening.
Community engagement has become an important part of the DSG ethos and having these two community elements involved in match days at Kingsmead the hope is to resonate with the local communities in and around Durban.
It's been a concerted effort from all involved to ramp up the match-day experience for the fans and with plenty of entertainment both on and off the field Kingsmead is excited to have the fans back on Monday for DSG's second home fixture of the tournament.
